Description

The Bacopa 'Gulliver Pink Heart Improved' is a brand new variety of Sutera cordata, with larger and more colourful flowers. Its countless pale pink corollas are marked with a beautiful purple eye and centered on a yellow throat, and are spread along trailing stems with small, vibrant green heart-shaped foliage. Cultivated as an annual, this robust and heat-resistant variety is very floriferous from May to October and quickly fills hanging baskets and balcony planters with a stunning display.

Bacopas are perennial plants or tender shrubs of the scrophulariaceae family, native to South Africa. They develop woody stems that spread all around the base and quickly form a fairly dense plant, 15 cm (6in) tall by 35 cm (14in) wide. They are adorned with small green heart-shaped leaves, approximately 1.5 cm (1in) in size, with toothed edges. The stems are covered throughout the summer with numerous flowers of almost identical size, generously scattered along their length, originating from the axils of the leaves. The flowers of the 'Gulliver Pink Heart Improved' variety are larger than those of most other varieties. They have a tubular base and spread into bicoloured corollas, pink and purple, composed of five rounded lobes, surrounding a yellow throat.

Thanks to their shape, bacopas easily complement all types of balcony plants. For example, they pair well with taller plants such as dwarf roses, pennisetums, or pelargoniums, as well as double impatiens. They are also effective when grouped together or used as temporary ground cover in flower beds. The Bacopa Gulliver Pink Heart is perfect for brightening up a windowsill or the base of a partially sun-exposed wall. It will complement pastel flowers and soften the vibrant colours of trailing surfinias and fuchsias.

Note: Please be aware that our plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant and store them in a sheltered location (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame, etc.) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before placing them outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

Plant your bacopas in a sunny location or possibly in partial shade in very hot regions. These plants require a light and humus-rich soil and appreciate a fertilizer input. They tolerate a rather dry soil quite well, but regular watering is essential to support flowering. You can plant your bacopas in a pot. In a pot, they must be regularly watered. Usually grown as annuals, they are actually fragile perennials; by bringing them indoors at the first frost, you can extend their flowering into autumn and winter. Outdoor cultivation is possible by the seaside, with good winter mulching. Plan for a light pruning in March. To further branch out the bacopas, you can pinch the ends of the stems to encourage them to divide.
