Description

The Drummond's Phlox 'Starry Eyes' is an annual plant with a medium size (45 cm (18in) tall when in flower, 30 cm (12in) wide).
Its habit is bushy and upright. Its stems bear sessile leaves that are 3 to 8 cm (1 to 3in) long, lanceolate to ovate, and of medium green colour.

The numerous flowers are borne in terminal cymes. The multicoloured corollas with 5 petals always have a different coloured star centred on the flower's heart.

The flowers emit a subtle fragrance and are perfect for creating scented wildflower bouquets.

In the garden, Phlox drummondii 'Starry Eyes' form beautiful multicoloured borders or blend harmoniously in beds of perennial and annual plants. The relatively small size of the annual Phlox allows it to be grown in pots on the terrace, where its colours and fragrance will enchant the eyes and nose from June to August.

Choose a rich and humus-rich soil for it, cool and well-drained. Drummond's Phlox 'Starry Eyes' tolerate dry soils. It thrives in hot and sunny locations. It is easy to cultivate.

Planting and care

Sow Phlox drummondii 'Starry Eyes' from February to May in a seed tray. Use good quality compost to sift over the surface to ensure the seed is well bound to its substrate. Before sowing, gently firm down the compost with a board. Scatter your seeds evenly. Cover the seeds by sprinkling compost or vermiculite on top, gently firming it down, and water generously with a fine spray. Place your seed tray in a well-lit area, away from direct sunlight, at a temperature of 18°C (64.4°F) to 20°C (68°F). Lower the temperature at night to 18°C (64.4°F) to create a beneficial germination cycle.

The seeds will take 10 to 21 days to germinate. When the seedlings are manageable, transplant them into 7cm (3in) pots. Keep the compost moist but not excessively so during growth. Then, 15 days before their final planting, gradually acclimatise them to a temperature of 15°C (59°F).

By the end of May or early June, the temperature in the garden will be warm enough to plant your young plants. Choose a sunny location. Add a good handful of compost to each planting hole. Space your plants 30cm (12in) apart.

Excess moisture can lead to the development of Powdery Mildew, a visible macroscopic fungus that appears as a white powder on the leaves. To prevent this, choose well-draining soil and avoid wetting the foliage during watering.

Regularly remove faded flowers to maintain their beauty and promote repeat flowering.
