Description

Annual Rose Mallow 'Loveliness' is a gorgeous heirloom variety that is both fast-growing and floriferous. All summer long, the plants display silky, hibiscus-like blooms in an irresistible shade of rose pink. Grow alongside Sweet Williams, dwarf roses or sage for summer bedding schemes full of poetry and colour.

Lavatera trimestris or annual mallow belong to the Malvaceae family. It is native to the Mediterranean basin, occurring naturally in rocky, coastal areas. 'Loveliness' is a classic heirloom variety that rapidly forms small, bushy plants, measuring about 1 m tall for a spread of about 50 cm. From June-July to October (earlier in warmer climates), the dark greyish-green, palmate foliage is covered in large, rose pink trumpet-shaped blooms.

Perfect for cottage gardens, mixed borders and annual bedding schemes alongside love-in-a-mist, cosmos or flax, roses, Russian sage etc. For best results, provide your annual mallow plants with a sunny position, preferably sheltered from strong winds. Annual mallow thrives in light, perfectly drained soils. Regularly remove spent flowers to encourage new blooms all season long!

Planting and care

Sow in a heated greenhouse from March to May. Bury the seeds under 1 cm of soil. When the seedlings are strong enough to be handled, transplant one every 30 cm. Alternatively, direct sow from May to June when the soil is warmed through. Ideally, outdoor temperatures should be around 18°C for optimum germination rates. Germination generally takes about 14 days. Annual mallow enjoys light, well-drained soils, a sunny position that is preferably sheltered from strong winds and torrential rain.
