Description

Centratherum Intermedium Pineapple Sangria is a perennial plant native to Brazil that forms a small bush 30 to 50 cm (12 to 20in) tall and wide.

Its deciduous foliage is dark green and composed of simple, elliptical-shaped leaves. A pineapple fragrance emanates from the foliage when crushed. This is where its name Pineapple Sangria comes from.

The solitary flowers, measuring 4 to 5 cm (2in), are blue-violet capitula carried by long stalks tinged with red. Flowering occurs from July to October. The shape of the flowers and its South American origin have given it the common name of Brazilian Button. The Centratherum self-seeds spontaneously at the end of flowering. If you want to prevent its spread, remove the faded flowers before the seeds ripen.

Centratherum Intermedium Pineapple Sangria thrives in moist soil and a sunny or partially shaded spot in the garden. It withstands summer drought well. It can tolerate temperatures down to -7°C (19.4°F), but beyond that, it will need the protection of a good mulch to survive the winter. Plant it in groups of about ten to create a strong mass effect. It is used in flower beds but also in rockeries for its ground-covering qualities.

An ecological gesture: Pollinating insects and butterflies will be attracted to your garden by the presence of its flowers. A good way to improve the ecosystem of your ornamental garden and vegetable garden.

There are no known diseases or pests for this plant.

Planting and care

Sow Centratherum intermedium Pineapple Sangria from February to April in a seed tray. Use good quality soil. Sow your seeds by broadcasting them. Cover the seeds by sprinkling soil or vermiculite on top, lightly press down and water generously with a fine rain. Place your seed tray in a well-lit area, without direct sunlight, at a temperature of 20°C to 22°C.

The seeds will germinate in 14 to 21 days. Once the plants have reached a height of 5 cm (2in), transplant them into pots. 15 days before their final planting, start acclimating them gradually to a temperature of 15°C.

By the end of May or early June, the temperature in the garden will be warm enough to plant your young plants. Choose a sunny or partially shaded location. Add a good scoop of compost to each planting hole. Space your plants 30 to 45 cm (12 to 18in) apart.

If you want to prevent its spread, remove faded flowers before the seeds ripen.
There are no known diseases or pests for this plant.

Protect the plant with a thick layer of mulch as soon as the first frost hits.
