Description

Mimulus x hybridus 'Calypso F1' is a beautiful collection of hybrid Monkey flowers offering a rich palette of bright colours, ranging from white to yellow, bright orange, pink and garnet red. Their funnel-shaped blooms are all bicoloured and speckled. Often treated as annuals in cooler climates, these fast-growing perennials make excellent groundcover plants for wet and humus-rich areas of the garden. They also look beautiful when the garlands of flowers tumble from hanging baskets all summer long.

Mimulus, also known as Monkey Flower or Musk Flower because of the musky smell of some varieties, belongs to the Scrophulariaceae family and is native to Mexico. This very lush and floriferous plant is low-growing, forming 25 cm tall, 30-40 cm wide carpets. Its dark green to grey-green foliage is oval and very slightly toothed. The flower of the mimulus has five fused petals with two lips, resembling a face. 'Calypso F1' displays speckled, two-toned blooms in a variety of colours, including several shades of red and white, as well as orange, yellow and pink.

Mimulus enjoys light, semi-shade and cool, moist to wet soils. Avoid growing it in the hot sun. It is suitable for exotic themed gardens, in borders and flower beds alongside Mimulus luteus, or at the edge of a pond where it will find all the moisture it needs. It is not very cold hardy and becomes vulnerable when temperatures drop below -5°C. To keep the plants for several summers, it is possible to grow Mimulus in pots that are overwintered indoors.

Planting and care

Sow in seed trays from March to May in sowing soil. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, at room temperature (between 20 and 30°C), with plenty of light to enable germination. The young seedlings will start to appear after 10 to 21 days. Gradually harden off the young plants. Once they are strong enough to be handled and all risk of frost is over, transplant them outdoors in moist, loose soil. Leave 25 to 30 cm between each plant. Removing spent flowers helps encourage new blooms.
