Description

Annual Lavender with the scent of Oregano is a very special variety of Lavender, which is somewhat similar to Butterfly Lavender. It bears smaller flowers than the classic Lavender and exhales a fragrance that resembles oregano with a hint of mint. Sow from March to May.

Native to the Iberian Peninsula where it is found in its natural state, this Lavender with the scent of Oregano is an annual plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family. It forms fragrant clumps with finely cut green foliage. Its English name, "Fernleaf Lavender," literally comes from this characteristic. In summer it is adorned with marvellous little blue flowers.

Lavender is a resilient and easy-to-grow aromatic plant that thrives in the sun and prefers poor, light, even rocky, and well-drained soils. If your soil is damp and clayey, we recommend growing it in a pot instead.

It only dislikes humidity and overly rich soils, which accelerate its growth to give it a lanky appearance.

Harvest: Lavender is harvested during flowering, from late June to August depending on the region. Take advantage of the harvest to prune it to maintain a rounded and dense shape.

Storage: Lavender is traditionally preserved by drying.

The gardener's little trick: In the garden, plant some Lavender at the base of your roses. It is a classic association which can repel insects.

Planting and care

Sowing:

Lavender seeds are sown from February to May at a temperature of around 18°C. Germination usually takes about twenty days.

Sow in a tray filled with good seed compost, in full light. Just cover the seeds with a pinch of compost or vermiculite. The tray should not be covered, keep the substrate moist but not waterlogged.

When the seedlings are strong enough to handle, transplant them into pots and gradually acclimatise your young plants to outdoor conditions.

Transplant to the garden or pots when the plants are well developed, they can potentially spend their first winter in a cold frame.

Cultivation:

Lavender is a hardy and easy-to-grow herb which thrives in poor, light, even rocky and well-drained soils. If your soil is moist and clayey, we recommend growing it in a pot where it will do very well.

As for maintenance, water every 15 days or once a month if the plant is already well established. Pruning once or twice a year (on the current year's growth) will maintain a nice rounded and bushy shape.
