Our range of columnar cacti. The iconic Cereus peruvianus or Peruvian torch forms tall bluish columns which can exceed 3m in height when potted or grown in a greenhouse. Native to Argentina, the Trichocereus terscheckii has a stocky habit in its youth but becomes a true candelabra with age; it can reach up to 10m when planted in the ground in dry and warm climates. The Pachycereus pringlei or 'Mexican candelabra cactus' is a majestic species that grows slowly but can eventually form clusters of ramified column, while with its sinuate habit and bluish-green hue, the Myrtillocactus geometrizans or 'Blue Candle' produces small edible and decorative fruits.
These columnar cacti adapt well to conservatories, greenhouses, or indoor sunny spots. In summer, they can be moved outdoors. The hardiest can be planted in dry gardens in Mediterranean climates or other locations protected from rain. Provide them with a highly draining mineral substrate and occasional watering during their growth period. In winter, they should be kept dry and cool, sheltered from frosts for most species, except for a few hardy varieties suitable for milder zones.
