Our range of ball cacti or cushion cacti, with a globular shape. Their most famous representative is the Echinocactus grusonii, nicknamed 'Mother-in-law's Cushion', which forms a ball bristling with golden thorns. These cacti are grown in pots, in a bright indoor space, or outdoors in a sheltered and dry location. Some, like the Echinopsis multiplex, nicknamed 'Moses' Ball', are prized for their beautiful flowering. Mammillaria such as the Mammillaria hahniana form a cushion covered in fine white hairs and produce an elegant crown of bright pink flowers in spring. The slow-growing Gymnocalycium saglionis forms a wide, flattened ball with well-defined midribs and can flower in summer, producing large white or pink flowers.

These globular cacti thrive in a mineral and very well-draining substrate. In summer, they can be moved outdoors onto the patio provided that they are protected fom excess water. Bring them indoors in winter if temperatures drop below freezing. The slightly hardier species should still be sheltered from rain, for example on a covered patio. Water sparingly during the growth period and suspend watering in winter to avoid the risk of rot.
