Description

The Late Double Tulips mix creates a spectacular effect of opulence in May, when their large double peony-like flowers in various colours bloom together. They stand tall on long, thick, and sturdy stems, which are perfect for making bouquets.

The Late Double Tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Originally horticultural, it is now classified in division 11, characterised by its very double and ruffled flowers in peony-like shapes, carried by weather-resistant stems. Late double tulips, sensitive to rain, are among the last to bloom in the garden. The stem height varies between 40 and 50 cm (16 and 20in), depending on the varieties. The flowers are impressive, with a diameter of 7 to 9 cm (3 to 4in), resembling a fully bloomed peony. To enhance the plant's elegance, it has lush foliage composed of wide lanceolate leaves with a slightly glaucous green colour. The foliage will turn yellow and dry out a few weeks after flowering, when the bulb enters its dormant period.

The Late Double Tulip finds its place in large flowerbeds, alongside perennial plants and pastel-coloured tulips that it enhances. This tulip also beautifully decorates balconies and terraces. But it is undoubtedly in bouquets that it excels, paired with lilac clusters, peonies, or garden irises, for example. When arranging them in a vase, use very little water, just a small amount is enough! Additionally, if your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase each day. Remember to consider the height and flowering period of the tulips when designing your flowerbeds, as these parameters can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few more bulbs for cutting, as the flowers last a long time in a vase.

Note: each batch is unique and the proportion of colours may vary significantly from one batch to another.

Planting and care

Plant the late double Tulip bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), spaced 10 cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The Late Double Tulip will thrive in moist to dry soil. Plant it in a good location, sunny or with light shade. Once the flowering is over, it is preferable to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant. Allow the leaves to completely dry before cutting them.
