A selection of red-flowered Weigela. Easy and generous bushes that colour the garden with their brilliant flowering in late spring. The most vigorous are true hedge bushes, such as the famous Weigela florida Bristol Ruby, with crimson red flowers turning pink, which forms a veritable cascade of 2.50 m (8ft) in May-June. There are also smaller red varieties, more suitable for small gardens and pot cultivation. Let's mention Weigela Nain rouge Courtanin, a bush of 1m (3ft) with scarlet flowering, the cultivar Red Prince which flowers in September, or Weigela All Summer Red, whose bright red flowers bloom almost continuously from April to September. In red weigela, the foliage can be variegated (Weigela florida Moulin Rouge (Brigela) or purple. Not demanding, Weigelas grow in any loose soil, including limestone, but not too dry, in sunny or partially shaded sites. They reach adult size in 5/6 years. They can be used as solitary plants, in free hedges, in flowerbeds, or in pots for dwarf varieties. To accompany them, think of lilacs, roses, deutzias, Japanese quinces and kolkwitzias.
