I have had an Amazon lily for 18 years. It flowers 2 to 3 times a year and it is beautiful. However, the leaves are starting to turn yellow. I am going to repot it to see if the bulb is not being attacked. I have seen some advice.

Description

Eucharis amazonica, also known as the Amazon lily, is a bulbous perennial. It bears dark green elliptical, undulate, evergreen leaves, 25 to 30cm (10 to 12in) long. They are borne on petioles 20 to 30cm (8 to 12in) long.

It blooms in September. It forms umbels that are carried on bare stems. They are composed of four to eight fragrant flowers, 3 to 10cm (1 to 4in) in diameter. The flowers are pure white. The plant develops a clumping habit.

This plant is native to tropical forests of Colombia and northeastern Peru. It is frost-sensitive and can tolerate a minimum of 10°C (50°F). The Amazon lily reaches a height of 70cm (28in) and a width of 15cm (6in) at maturity. It is suitable for container gardening and winter gardens, and is also a good houseplant. It is a sterile species that is cultivated worldwide. Plant it in spring.

Planting and care

Plant in spring in well-drained, sandy, infertile soil that is rich in humus but without fresh manure. It can also be placed in a greenhouse under bright, filtered light in a potting mix, for example. Plant at a depth of 15cm (6in). During growth, water it once or twice a week and apply liquid fertiliser twice a month. It blooms in September. Reduce watering in winter. Place it in shade or partial shade. Repot every 3 to 4 years in spring.
