Description

The 'Christmas Pearl' Early Single Tulip, perfect for bouquets, resembles a pink mother-of-pearl flower. Its perfectly formed corolla has soft pink petals washed with fresh pink and white, with a slightly translucent texture. It blooms at the beginning of the tulip season, in mid-April. Its short and sturdy stems withstand the frequent bad weather in early spring. It is a flower with subtle and refined colours, exceptionally beautiful in pastel-toned borders.

The 'Christmas Pearl' Tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Originally horticultural, it is currently classified in Division 1, which includes varieties with single flowers that bloom very early in the season. It will reach a height of 40cm (16in) when in bloom. Perched on sturdy stems, well above the broadly lanceolate leaves, the narrow cup-shaped flowers, 6cm (2in) wide, show six "petals" (more precisely tepals) with varying edges of slightly darker pink and white. The flowering takes place in April, at the beginning of the tulip season.

With their wide range of colours, strong and resistant flowers, suitable for both borders and bouquets, the popularity of early single tulips is well established. They are among the most planted varieties. Unmatched in bringing the colours of spring to pots, where they last longer than other tulips, or in sunny gardens, don't forget to consider their height and flowering period when designing your borders, as these parameters vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few more bulbs for cutting, as they make gorgeous cut flowers that last a long time in a vase.

About Botanical Species: Tulip species can be found from Western Europe to China and Japan, including Eastern Europe, Asia Minor, and Central Asia. Their distribution area also includes North Africa and the Indian subcontinent. The centre of diversity for the genus is located in the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains and the steppes of Kazakhstan.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained. Never add manure or poorly decomposed compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The 'Christmas Pearl' tulip will thrive in moist to dry soil in summer. Plant it in a sunny or partially shaded location. After flowering, it is advisable to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
