Description

Amaryllis Exotica is a spectacular indoor bulb. It blooms from December to May in clusters of giant flowers.

The flowers are single, with a yellow-orange colour finely striated with red. The heart of the amaryllis is green and adorned with 6 long stamens. The flowers are perched on sturdy stems.

At maturity, Amaryllis, also known as Hippeastrum, can reach a height of 30 to 45 cm (12 to 18in). Place your Amaryllis Exotica in a pot to enhance your interior. You can also grow it in the garden against a well-exposed wall, sheltered from cold winds. Amaryllis does not tolerate frost. When cut, the flowers will form beautiful bouquets.

Planting and care

Amaryllis Exotica thrives in the sun in any damp soil. For pot cultivation, allow for 2 cm (1in) around the bulb and use a heavy pot to prevent it from tipping under the weight of the amaryllis, which tends to lean towards the sun. Use a light, well-drained, neutral or slightly acidic potting mix. In a pot, leave half of the bulb out of the soil to prevent the neck from getting wet during watering and rotting (in addition, this provides more space for the soil). Plant your Amaryllis bulbs from October to March, depending on the desired flowering period, keeping in mind that it takes 2 months between planting and flowering. After flowering, cut the flowers and allow the foliage to grow. At the end of summer, let the soil dry out and cut off the dry leaves. 6 weeks later, repot the bulb in fresh soil.
