Description
'Polar Shift' is a large and magnificent bicolour tall bearded iris, icy white and deep cornflower blue. Its flower is visible from afar due to the very strong contrast of its colours, as well as its large ruffles. Floriferous, elegant and vigorous, this variety deserves a prominent place in an iris collection or in a large spring bed.
Iris 'Polar Shift' belongs to the category of large bearded irises, commonly called Iris germanica. Perennial, it grows from fleshy, horizontal rhizomes, barely buried, which lengthen and multiply over the years. The plant forms clumps of erect, long, narrow, sword-shaped, slightly glaucous green leaves which can be deciduous or evergreen in winter. In flower, it reaches 95-98cm in height. Its flower stems are well-branched and carry 8 to 10 buds which bloom successively over about 3 weeks. It is a rather late mid-season variety, which blooms between late May and early June in a medium climate. In bearded irises, the flower consists of three upright petals and three trailing sepals, broader, with a hairy beard. In 'Polar Shift', the petals are icy white, lightly shaded with mauve on the edges. The sepals are deep violet blue, bordered with the same icy white and marked with small white patches near the beard. This orange beard is visible in the throat of the flower. This variety also offers a light, sweet fragrance.
'Polar Shift' was registered in 2016 by Slovak hybridizer Anton Mego. Its seedling number is AM-09/3708-1. It comes from the cross 'Decadence' × seedling AM-02-0889-2, a line which includes 'World Premier', 'Twilight Blaze' and 'Night Attack'. This variety received the Honorable Mention of the American Iris Society in 2021.
Plant iris 'Polar Shift' in an iris bed, a large sunny border or on a well-drained slope. Three rhizomes, arranged in a triangle, are enough to form a beautiful clump within three years. You can pair it with iris 'Arpège', to keep a white and blue palette. Tuck a few ornamental alliums, Allium caeruleum and A. nigrum, between the iris clumps. Add a summer-flowering mullein: Verbascum chaixii 'Album' for a white vertical, or Verbascum 'Rosie' for its fresh pink colour.

Planting and care
Plant Iris ‘Polar Shift’ from July to October. Choose a very sunny position, with at least six hours of direct sun per day, as shade significantly reduces flowering. Set it in fertile, neutral to calcareous soil, especially very well-drained; in clay soil, loosen the soil widely and add gravel or coarse sand to avoid stagnant water around the rhizome. Place the rhizome almost at the surface, with the upper side visible to the sun, and bury only the roots. Space the plants 30 to 40cm apart. Water at planting time, then only during prolonged drought in the first year. Remove faded flowers, cut spent flower stems at the base, and remove dry leaves at the end of winter.
Divide the rhizomes every three or four years in summer, when the centre of the clump flowers less.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
