Description

Coreopsis Solar Fancy is a compact and extremely floriferous perennial, with large, bicoloured cherry-red and cream-edged flowers that bloom throughout the summer and often beyond. Perfect for brightening up balconies, terraces or sunny borders, this easy-going variety thrives in full sun in any well-drained soil and is hardy down to -20°C.

Coreopsis grandiflora Solar Fancy belongs to the Asteraceae family, just like daisies. This cultivar has been selected for its generous flowering, which can continue from June to October, especially if faded flowers are regularly removed. Like other Coreopsis from the Solar series, it forms a bushy clump about 50 cm tall and 45 cm wide within a few months. The plant has light green, deciduous, finely cut and slightly downy foliage. Its flower heads, measuring 5 to 6 cm in diameter, are borne on slender yet sturdy stems that withstand wind well. This variety is highly attractive to pollinating insects and can be grown as a perennial or sometimes as an annual due to its rapid growth and such abundant flowering that it may exhaust the plant within 2 to 3 years.

Coreopsis grandiflora Solar Fancy is an excellent plant for flowering borders, enlivening slopes or brightening up rock gardens that don’t dry out too much in summer. It’s also a must-have for flowering terraces, and its generous flowering is perfect for creating cheerful bouquets. It pairs beautifully with warm-toned wallflowers (Brilliant Bedder Series Mixed), dwarf asters, love-in-a-mist or perennial flax for charming summer displays. This small perennial also fits perfectly into natural or slightly wild compositions, alongside airy grasses, yarrows or compact coneflowers like 'Cheyenne Spirit'. In pots, containers or in the ground, it flowers abundantly from the very first summer, with minimal maintenance and little watering required.

Planting and care

Coreopsis grandiflora Solar Fancy does not like stagnant moisture in winter or heavy, clayey, and compacted soils. To thrive, this plant requires full sun and light, porous soil that is rich but not excessively so, always well-drained, and neither too dry nor waterlogged. It tolerates a wide range of pH levels, from slightly acidic to slightly alkaline. Under these conditions, it flowers generously and proves long-lasting in the garden. To encourage flowering, it is important to regularly remove faded flowers. Severe pruning in July promotes a new wave of flowers in autumn and helps extend the plant's lifespan. Finally, remember to divide the clumps every three years or so to rejuvenate them and maintain their vigour.
