Description

The Heuchera 'Van Gogh' is a beautiful perennial ground cover with acid green foliage streaked with veins of magnificent coppery red. It brightens up beds in light sun, partial or full shade. In summer, it produces delicate pink-red bell-shaped flower spikes, which further enhance its appeal.

Heucheras have become essential plants in our gardens in recent years. Their evergreen foliage, available in multiple shades, adds brilliance to flower beds. These plants belong to the Saxifragaceae family and make fantastic border plants. They also perform very well in pots, making them suitable for decorating even small terraces. Part of the Master Painters series of heucheras by Sandrine and Thierry Delabroye, 'Van Gogh' is a compact variety that reaches about 30 cm (12in) in height and width, and its airy inflorescences rise above the lobed foliage. The foliage starts off coppery red with acid green margins, then turns green with red veins, creating a changing spectacle.

'Van Gogh', like many heucheras, is not very demanding when it comes to soil type, as long as it is well-drained. In heavy soil, it is preferable to lighten the planting soil with sand or well-decomposed compost. It prefers partial shade or shade, but still needs some light, at least in the morning, to express its beautiful colours. Once established, it can tolerate occasional dry spells.

You can also easily propagate it by taking cuttings, by removing a section of its creeping stems, which will allow you to create a whole border in a few years. This is also a way to rejuvenate the clump, which sometimes tends to thin out after 3 to 5 years of cultivation.

Plant this heuchera in large numbers to create a spectacular and dense ground cover, or you can also combine it with other varieties with similar colours such as 'Red Lightning' or 'Miracle'. On the other hand, you can play with contrasts, like with 'Palace Purple' for example. In shade, it will enhance the dark foliage of ferns and perfectly complement other vibrant plants like 'All Gold' Hakonechloa.

Planting and care

Prepare a planting hole of 20 cm (8in) x 20 cm (8in) x 20 cm (8in). If your soil is heavy, mix some compost with the crumbled soil, partially fill the hole, and place your seedling (after removing the pot) so that the top of the root ball of your plant is covered with 3 cm (1in) of soil. Adding a base fertiliser (dehydrated blood, horn powder) will nourish your plant during its rooting period without the risk of burning. Firm the soil and water generously to eliminate air pockets. If the weather is dry, you will need to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate the establishment of your plant. Heucheras renew their foliage in late winter, so we recommend cutting back the previous year's leaves in January or February.
