Description

The spring harlequin! Erysimum 'Winter Party', a variety of false wallflower, forms a compact plant covered with brightly coloured flowers ranging from yellow to violet through orange-pink and pink-orange. A carnival of colours from early March in pots and planters.

The perennial wallflower 'Winter Party' is one of the latest creations of a German hybridisation program. Particularly remarkable, it offers an abundant and very early flowering, from early March. Its flowers, quite large for a wallflower, open saffron yellow, gradually infusing with pink, temporarily giving them an orange hue, and finally turning violet-magenta when mature.  Each spike has a tricolored appearance. The cooler the weather, the more intense the colours and the accentuated contrast. However, the flowering never loses its exceptional brightness that always makes 'Winter Party' Erysimum ready to fight against the greyness and gloom of March under the showers!

The false wallflower 'Winter Party' forms an exceptionally well-branched, compact bush, about 30 cm (12in) in all directions. It appreciates a well-drained soil or compost in full sun position. It flowers from March to late May, early June. Often grown as biennials in spring compositions, potted plants can be transplanted to the garden after flowering where they will live for several years with a pruning in July and occasional watering during the driest periods.

Note: Our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible, in pots, planters or directly in flower beds.

Planting and care

The plug plants of 'Winter Party' Erysimum can be planted in pots and containers or directly in the ground in a finely prepared and enriched soil. Plant them as soon as possible, in September-October. If the intended location is not yet ready or the conditions are not favourable for planting (heavy rain or too dry soil), you can grow them in pots for 4 to 6 weeks. At planting or shortly after, you should pinch the tip of the plant between your thumb and index finger to remove the terminal bud and stimulate branching. You can repeat this operation until mid-October to obtain denser bushes.

In pots and containers, use a good, well-draining potting compost for flowering plants (for example, with plenty of bark or perlite) and enriched with slow-release fertilizer. The top of the plug should be level with the potting soil. Water generously at planting and in the following weeks, as the plug plants can dry out quickly. However, be careful with excess water! Make sure to use containers with drainage holes and empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Remember to water even during winter if it doesn't rain or if the container is placed in a sheltered location. Do not water during freezing periods.

From 3 weeks after planting until after flowering, apply a liquid fertiliser for flowering plants 1 to 2 times a week with the watering water, even in winter (as long as watering is necessary). The faded spikes can be cut with scissors to maintain a neat appearance, but it is not essential, as the flowering continues as long as the plant does not lack water. Once the flowering is over, the plants in pots can be replanted in the garden in full sun, in a rockery or in a flower bed, after being pruned by about 5 cm (2in).
