Description
Ranunculus asiaticus Poodle Chaouen II® is a florists' ranunculus which is remarkable for its large, very double, fringed flowers in an intense red. Its corollas are truly different from classic ranunculus. This variety shines in spring borders and, above all, provides excellent cut flowers, long-lasting in a vase, luminous and highly decorative.
This variety belongs to the species Ranunculus asiaticus, a tuberous perennial in the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae), often grown as an annual or as a short-lived plant depending on the climate. The wild species is known by the names Persian buttercup, florists' ranunculus, garden ranunculus and Oriental ranunculus. In the wild, it is native to the eastern Mediterranean, widespread from the southern Aegean Sea, including Crete and Cyprus, to western and south-western Iran. It can be found in sunny spots, on ground that is damp in spring and drier in summer. It grows from a fleshy claw and flowers before entering dormancy when the heat sets in. It is not very hardy, only tolerating brief frosts of around -4/-5°C in very well-drained soil.
Poodle Chaouen II® belongs to the Poodle series, developed by the Japanese breeder Aya Engei. This series brings together ranunculus with intricate flowers, recognisable by their narrow, crumpled, heavily fringed petals and their long, sturdy stems, good for cutting. Poodle Chaouen II® received a 2nd prize at the Royal FloraHolland Glazen Tulp Award 2023 for the Poodle range. In the garden, the plant forms an upright clump, fairly compact at the base, 30 to 45cm tall and about 20 to 30cm wide, while its flower stems reach 50-55cm long. The flower buds are green and rounded. They open into very double flowers, first globose, then opening into thick, crumpled, 8 to 12 cm diameter cups. The many petals are narrow, tightly packed, irregularly wavy and finely crinkled, giving the corolla a waffled, creped, baroque appearance. The colour is a bright red to deep scarlet red, with darker bronze shades on the more mature flowers. The black heart, visible on the most fully open corollas, remains partly hidden by the petals. In the garden, in an average climate, flowering takes place in April-May.
Plant the Persian buttercup in borders, edging and even in pots on a terrace. The variety Poodle Chaouen II deserves a prominent spot, as its flower is extraordinary. Always plant it in light, fertile, well-drained soil. In clayey ground, it is best grown in a container or on a mound. It can be paired in the garden and flower arrangements with the very green tulip ‘Evergreen’, Triumph tulip ‘White Proud’ in pure white, Triumph tulip ‘Shiun’, edged with magenta pink, and ornamental onion ‘Purple Sensation’, which offers violet balls on tall stems.

Planting and care
Plant florist's ranunculus Poodle Chaouen II in autumn, in mild climates or in pots (under cover), for early flowering (March-April-May). It can also be planted in spring, in cold climates, for summer flowering.
It thrives in partial shade as well as in full sun. Place it in light soil, ideally enriched with coarse sand, humus-bearing and moist. This plant dislikes lime-bearing soils. In autumn, lift the tubers and store them in a dry, cool place to protect them from frost, as they are not very hardy.
Before planting, soak the bulbs for half a day. When planting, set the tubers in an equal-parts mixture of garden soil, leaf mould and fairly coarse river sand. It will flower 120 days after planting.
Planting density: 16 to 20 bulbs per m².

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
