Description

The 'Isabelle Autissier' Rose is a modern hybrid tea rose appreciated for its long and delicately coloured flowering, as well as its vigour and good health. Its beautiful double and turbinated flowers exude an intense fragrance, both fresh and floral, and sport a very pretty shade ranging from tender pink to pale yellow, going up to apricot-orange towards the tightly packed heart of the flower. They bloom from late spring until the first frost on ample, relatively dark, and healthy green foliage. The Isabelle Autissier rose shows excellent hold on the bush but also in a vase; time has little grip on this flower, which retains its beautiful shape for a long time.

Isabelle Autissier' or 'Adasilthé', is a modern bush rose with large flowers obtained by Michel Adam in 1998 and dedicated to the great and brilliant French navigator of the same name. This variety won the AJH Rose Prize in 2000. This dense, bushy, and rounded shrub reaches about 1m (3ft) in height and 80cm (32in) in width at maturity, with rapid growth. It produces robust, thorny, and well-branched branches, which bear abundant and site foliage, bronze bordered with russet at the start, becoming dark green and very disease resistant. Throughout the summer, if faded flowers are removed, the plant continuously produces large flowers measuring 10-12cm (4-5in) in diameter, with deep cups, whose turbinated shape is typical of hybrid tea roses. They comprise about 30 broad petals arranged in a spiral, tightly packed in the centre of the corolla. Their light pink colour gradually turns to pale yellow and then orange towards the heart of the flower, while the petals take on a carmine pink hue on the periphery. They are solitary, borne at the end of long shoots from the current year or emerging from the 2-year-old stems. The flowering, recurrent, is also distinguished by a delicate and very floral fragrance, very fresh.

The Isabelle Autissier rose is an excellent garden bush, floriferous and vigorous, with fragrant roses that last up to 10 days in a vase. It can be used in flowerbeds, a large border, and a small flowering hedge. The colour of its flowers can be daringly paired with mauve or blue roses or, more classically, with white roses.  Some light-flowering perennial plants (autumn asters, foxgloves, penstemons, paniculate gypsophila or Crambe cordifolia), as well as grasses and nepetas, are ideal for enhancing its beauty and accompanying it late in the season. For example, combine it with Geranium Rozanne, Geranium Pink Cloud, Geranium grandiflorum, Panicum, Nepeta Walker's Low, and Campanulas. It will also look good on its own, for example, in groups of 3 plants and in a large pot on your terrace or balcony. Its flowers are, of course, gorgeous for bouquets.

Planting and care

Choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot with well-worked soil that is not too heavy and has enough nutrients. Avoid planting in poor and excessively dry soils. Prepare the soil by crumbling it and adding an amendment, such as blood, fish and bone, at the bottom of the planting hole. After planting, water abundantly to remove air pockets and continue to water regularly for a few weeks to help the roots establish.

Pruning modern repeat flowering roses is important for flowering and should be done in three stages:

1. Regular maintenance pruning: During the season, regularly shorten the flowering branches and remove faded flowers along with their stem, leaving 2 or 3 leaves to encourage repeat flowering.

2. Preparatory autumn pruning: Lightly prune in preparation for the 'main' spring pruning. Note: This is not recommended in regions with cold winters as this could weaken the bush.

3. Spring pruning: In February-March, when the buds have become shoots 2 to 3 cm (1in) long, prune the young, strong branches to one-quarter of their length.

When pruning, always aim to remove dead wood, diseased branches, and weak shoots while opening up the centre of the bush. Retain the most vigorous branches, generally 3 to 6 well-positioned, to maintain an attractive habit. Always prune at a slant ½ cm or 1 cm (0in) above an outward-facing bud.

Roses may develop unsightly spots at the end of summer, but this is a natural occurrence and doesn't harm the rose's growth.
