Description

Rosa Bees Paradise Gelb, with its small semi-double yellow flowers, is part of a collection of compact and carefree roses developed by German rose breeder Tantau to attract and nourish bees. They all form beautiful flowering cushions and have a large crown of easily accessible, pollen-rich stamens. This one has a rounded and bushy habit, making it an interesting subject for borders and terraces. Its flowering is perpetual and its small size allows it to be used in all gardens.

The flowers of Rosa Bees Paradise Gelb, gathered in small terminal clusters, come from the polyantha rose, an old hybrid derived from Rosa multiflora and R. chinensis. They are particularly rich in nectar and pollen. It forms a well-branched, low bush, about 50 cm (20in) tall and 50-60 cm (20-24in) wide. The flowers are semi-double cups, with a diameter of 2 to 4 cm (1 to 2in), composed of 5 to 10 lemon-yellow petals that turn slightly pink in cool weather. They open up to reveal a golden-yellow stamen-filled heart. Flowering starts in June and renews in successive waves until October. Flowering will slow down if the soil is too dry in summer, and resume in September. This variety develops fairly dark, glossy, deciduous foliage that falls in autumn. Its resistance to rose diseases is excellent.

Rosa Bees Paradise Gelb, is robust and hardy, thriving in all soils that are not too dry, but it prefers fertile and deep soils. Its dense and low habit allows it to be used in large borders, in not too dry rockeries or on slopes. It can also be planted in groups of 5 in the centre of a small bed. Plant it en masse along a pathway or to highlight shrub borders. It pairs well with light or opulent perennials, or other dwarf roses from the 'Bienenweide' and Bees Paradise series, the 'Bordure Blanche' rose, or the 'Bordure vive' rose. For example, it can be grown with perennial geraniums (Geranium Blue Cloud, Anne Folkard, Nimbus, Orion, Rozanne), campanulas (lactiflora, rapunculoides), catmints, snapdragons, foxgloves or carnations. It is perfect for decorating the terrace or balcony in a beautiful pot, large planter or container.

Bred by Tantau (Germany) in 2013.

Planting and care

These roses prefer a sunny location (at least 4 to 5 hours of sun per day) but protected from the scorching midday rays and strong winds. They like loose, permeable, deep, and fertile soils. They prefer neutral to slightly acidic soil but will thrive in any garden as long as the soil is well-prepared and rich. To plant your rose, work the soil well to a depth of 25 cm (10in), and place a base fertiliser such as bonemeal in the planting hole. Remove your rose from its pot, position your plant, covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil, fill in and water generously to eliminate air pockets. In dry weather, regular watering is necessary for a few weeks to aid root development. Provide your rose with special rose fertiliser that stimulates flowering.
