Description

'Heucherella 'Alabama Sunrise' is the result of cross-breeding Heuchera and Tiarella. It is related to the 'Heuchera Villosa' and has a robust character and vigour, especially during temporary droughts and high temperatures. During the months of May and June, small light pink bell-shaped flowers emerge along an upright stem and form feathery spikes.

Its interesting foliage is evergreen and consists of palmate leaves of a golden yellow colour with dark red veins at the beginning and green towards the end of summer. In autumn, the older leaves take on a pink-orange colour. The Heucherella grows up to 35cm (14in) in height. Its hardiness is excellent (down to -20°C (1°F)). Its spreading habit makes it an ideal ground cover.

Thanks to its bell-shaped flowers, the 'Alabama Sunrise' variety is perfect for cut flowers and brings lightness to bouquets. This perennial attracts birds and butterflies. It can be planted in containers as well as in large borders. It pairs well with perennials like tradescantias. It also goes well with Hosta 'Alcyon' or 'Blue Cadet', Pulmonaria 'Majesté', brunneras, or at the base of Astilbe chinensis.

Planting and care

Plant the Heucherella in shade or partial shade during spring or autumn. This hardy perennial is easy to grow and thrives in good garden soil. Therefore, plant it in a light and rich, moist but well-drained soil. Dig a hole with a depth of 20 cm (8in). Space the heucherellas 30 cm (12in) apart. During winter, the heucherella renews its foliage, so it is best to cut back the previous year's leaves during January to February. Also, the roots tend to lift, so it is necessary to mulch every year or alternatively, lift and replant in September and October, with the collar just at ground level. Be aware of leaf eelworms, vine weevils, and gall mites, as they can cause viruses that may be problematic.
