Description

The 'Perle d'Alsace' primroses are one of the most popular varieties of biennials thanks to their giant and colourful flowers. An explosive mix of colours in flower beds and planters arrives with the return of good weather!

The 'Perle d'Alsace' garden primrose is a variety that comes from the wild primrose, but with flowers three times larger and in a wide range of 19 vibrant colors. A biennial plant species, it is planted in autumn to be able to flower after undergoing a period of cold (which botanists call "vernalization"). After planting in pots and planters or directly in the garden, it will develop a bright green frilly rosette of evergreen foliage. In early spring, from February-March, its stemless flowers measuring 5 to 6 cm (2 - 2.4 in) in diameter appear in a cluster in the centre of the clump and grow in succession for about 3 months. It is a good idea to remove its faded flowers regularly to make room for new ones.

The stemless primroses or Primula acaulis like 'Perle d'Alsace' reach approximately 15 cm (5.9 in) in height and width. They can be used in pots (containers, planters...) on terraces and balconies as well as in flower beds where they can return every year. They go well with other biennials, perennials, and spring-flowering bulbs.

Note: Please be aware that our young plant plugs are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible, into containers, flowerpots, or directly into flowerbeds.

Planting and care

The 'Perle d'Alsace' primrose plug plants can be planted directly into the ground in a well-prepared, improved soil or in pots and containers. If possible plant them as soon as you receive them, in September-October. If the intended location is not yet ready or if the conditions are unfavourable for planting, you can let them grow on in pots for 4 to 6 weeks. In pots and containers, use a good, light and well-draining potting compost for flowering plants (such as geranium potting compost) enriched with clay and slow-release fertilizer. The top of the root ball should be level with the soil. Water generously at planting and during the following weeks, as the seedlings can quickly dry out. Be careful not to overwater! Make sure you use containers with drainage holes and empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Remember to water, even during the winter, if there is no rain or if the container is placed in a sheltered location. Do not water during periods of frost. Flowering abundantly and fast-growing, the 'Perle d'Alsace' stemless primroses are nutrient-demanding plants. As soon as they start growing again, in late February or early March, and throughout the flowering season, apply a liquid fertilizer 1 to 2 times a week when watering. Deadhead to encourage flowering. Once flowering is over, plants in pots can be replanted in the garden in semi-shade.
