Description

Alocasia 'Antoro Velvet' is a remarkable variety of elephant ear with large, arrow-shaped leaves in a dark, velvety hue. Their colour varies, depending on the season and lighting, from deep green to almost black-purple. This stunning tropical plant will thrive in a bright indoor space with a warm, humid atmosphere. Give it the spotlight it deserves—make it the star of your decor!

Native to Southeast Asia, Alocasia plants thrive in warm, humid tropical climates with partial shade. Though magnificent, they can be challenging to adapt to our homes, where the air is often too dry. Their roots are also sensitive to both excess moisture and drought. This is a rhizomatous perennial from the Araceae family, related to Arums. Its natural habitat is tropical forests bathed in humid air where temperatures never drop below 20°C.

Alocasia 'Antoro Velvet' is a horticultural hybrid. Depending on pot size and growing conditions, this Alocasia will reach between 40 and 70 cm in height, or even more. It forms a clump of long, fleshy petioles bearing thick, outward-arching, arrow-shaped leaves. The glossy leaf is deeply veined, and the leaf surface allows water to slide off. As it grows, the plant branches from the base, maintaining an elegant form. When an old leaf is removed, two new ones take its place.

With its dark, velvety leaves, Alocasia 'Antoro Velvet' adds a sophisticated and dramatic touch to any interior. This variety suits a range of decor styles. In a modern, minimalist setting, it can serve as a centrepiece in a black, white, or gold ceramic pot. It also blends beautifully into a luxurious jungle theme alongside plants with lighter foliage, such as Alocasia odora 'Batik', paired with rattan pots or gold accents. In a "Dark Academia" setting, Antoro Velvet complements dark wood bookshelves, velvet armchairs, and candlelight, enhancing a cosy, mystical atmosphere. In an Art Deco or retro style, its luxurious texture pairs well with brass elements, geometric patterns, and opulent accessories. No matter the style, this plant is a true star, exuding elegance and thriving where it receives indirect light and attentive care.

Maintenance and care

Water regularly, about twice a week, but allow the top 2-3 cm of the substrate to dry out between each watering. Be careful not to overwater! In winter, reduce the watering frequency. Misting is not recommended for velvety-leaved Alocasias; it is preferable to use a humidifier to provide the humidity they require.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 1 to 2 years, preferably in spring.
Use a light potting mix, enriched with organic matter, with good drainage capacity.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for houseplants (NPK 20-20-20 or 10-5-5) every 2 to 4 weeks in spring and summer, diluting to half the recommended dose.

Houseplant care

Clean the leaves regularly with soft water, remove yellowed, stained or damaged leaves.
Remove yellowed or damaged leaves at their base to encourage the growth of new shoots.

Disease and pest advice

In case of infestation, clean the leaves with a damp cloth and use a suitable organic insecticidal treatment.
