Description

Derived from the Syngonium podophyllum species, the Syngonium 'Maria' nicknamed 'Goosefoot Plant' is a cultivar with multicoloured foliage. Its leaves transition from a soft light green at the base to a rich red, with a shimmering silver-bronze sheen. Its habit resembles that of a vine so that it can be trained to climb up a support or left to cascade gracefully from a hanging basket. To maintain the vibrancy of its colours, place this Syngonium in a bright spot without direct sunlight and ensure adequate ambient humidity.

Belonging to the Araceae family, the Syngonium 'Maria Allusion' is a horticultural cultivar from the Syngonium podophyllum species also simply known as 'Maria'. This plant has a liana-like, climbing or creeping habit and exhibits rapid growth. Compact in size, it typically reaches 60 cm in height and 45 cm in spread at maturity. Its foliage displays elusive shades ranging from coppery red to dark green, all marked by a network of often redder veins. The Syngonium genus comprises around 36 species native to the humid tropical forests of Central and South America, particularly from Mexico to Brazil. In their natural habitat, these plants climb up trees, thriving in high humidity and dappled light beneath the canopy. As an indoor plant, this Syngonium prefers bright but indirect light and a well-draining substrate to best replicate natural conditions. It adapts to average household humidity levels but humidity above 60% will promote healthier foliage and reduce the likelihood of leaf edges browning.

The Syngonium 'Maria' is a versatile plant that fits into various interior décor styles. In a bohemian setting, its colourful leaves add a touch of light and airiness. It cascades beautifully from a pot on a shelf or a hanging basket. Alternatively, it can be trained to climb up a support. If you are a plant collector, pair it with species like the Philodendron 'Brasil' and Pothos 'Marble Queen' which share similar light and humidity requirements.

Maintenance and care

Water when the substrate is dry on the surface. In winter, reduce the watering frequency. Mist the foliage regularly to maintain high ambient humidity.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot in spring every 1 to 2 years or when the roots start to outgrow the pot.
Use a well-draining compost enriched with organic matter, ideally mixed with clay pebbles or perlite to promote aeration and prevent waterlogging.
A balanced liquid fertiliser for houseplants is recommended, to be applied every 2 to 3 weeks during the growth period (spring and summer). Reduce the frequency in autumn and winter.

Houseplant care

Undemanding, this plant simply requires removing yellowed leaves and wiping dusty leaves with a damp cloth to maintain their shine.
Prune the stems regularly to encourage branching and maintaining a compact or climbing shape according to your preference.

Disease and pest advice

If you spot scale insects, use a cotton pad soaked in alcohol to remove them, then spray a soapy water solution to prevent reinfestation. In case of red spider mite infestation, mist the young plant regularly to increase humidity.
