Description

Verbena x hybrida 'Blue Lagoon' is a variety of Garden Verbena that stands out for its magnificent deep blue colour. Resistant, it adorns itself from late spring to early autumn with a profusion of fragrant flowers. Remarkable both in borders and in containers.

Highly appreciated for their generous flowering and vibrant colours, Garden Verbenas, also known as Verbena hortensis, are perennial plants with low hardiness. A disadvantage largely compensated by their ease of cultivation and the duration of their flowering, which extends from June to September. Versatile, they will take their place in borders, flowerbeds, or even in containers.

The 'Blue Lagoon' Garden Verbena has a compact habit, reaching a height and width of 25cm (10in). You can easily associate it, in borders or in containers, with Petunias, ornamental tobacco, or even with Dichondra 'Silver Falls'

Native to South America and belonging to the Verbena family, Verbena x hybrida is, as its name suggests, the result of hybridization. It bears finely cut flowers arranged in umbels, like small flat bouquets measuring 6 to 8cm (2 to 3in), with colors that vary depending on the varieties. Its leaves are finely cut, sometimes lobed, and of a beautiful medium green. It is a nectar-bearing plant that is very attractive to butterflies.

Garden Verbenas thrive in sunny locations, in rich and well-drained soil. In containers, be careful not to provide too much nitrogen fertilizer, as this would promote foliage growth at the expense of flowers.

To encourage and support its long flowering period, remember to regularly remove faded flowers.

Easy to cultivate, Garden Verbenas can occasionally be susceptible to fungal diseases (Mildew, Powdery Mildew), a nuisance that can be easily avoided by not placing them in confined spaces and avoiding wetting their foliage during watering. It is also important to watch out for possible attacks by red spider mites, thrips, and slugs. These attentions will be greatly rewarded!

Planting and care

Sow from February to April, in a seed tray or directly in pots filled with a good seed compost kept slightly moist. Do not cover the seeds. Place the container in a well-lit, warm location at 24-27 °C (75.2-80.6°F). Germination usually takes 14 to 21 days. When the young plants are strong enough to handle, transplant if necessary into pots, then gradually acclimatise the young plants to outdoor conditions before planting them in the garden with a spacing of 45cm (18in).
